PETITION
NO: to turning the stream into an industrial zone
YES: to the protection of our island’s water resources
YES: to the natural environment (wherever we can still come into contact with it)
YES: to quality of life
YES, to the urgent need for a comprehensive development plan that will determine land use for our island
On 6 February 2006, the previous municipal government accepted, on behalf of the community, plans for the development of an operation providing ready-mixed concrete and asphalt next to Skotini Stream. In reality, however, few citizens were aware of the issue.
Recently, the local press has been regularly informing the public of the potential impact of the project, summarized below:
The destruction of the creek, which is the most significant hydrological basin and source of water replenishing Aegina’s water table (which is why the local Prefecture recently constructed check dams).
The island’s existing traffic problem will worsen through the transportation of materials along completely unsuitable roads.
The pollution caused by asphalt production will remain permanently in the soil, rocks and plants
Gases, dust and odours will be emitted during production.
It is a notable fact that Skotini Creek (the mythological Asopos River) is an area of particular ecological value whose environment has remained almost untouched until now.
With our signatures, we wish to register our strong opposition to the project with every pertinent authority starting with the Municipality of Aegina who must in turn re-examine the previous decision and take urgent action so that this catastrophe can be prevented.
